Resident & Medical Student Elective Opportunities
Dear Residents/Medical Students,
We would like to extend an invitation to you to join either Dr. Denise Coulas or Dr. Jason Malinowski to complete your rural rotation requirements in Barry’s Bay.
Dr. Coulas grew up in Barry's Bay and returned to the area to practice medicine and raise her family. She graduated from the University of Toronto in 1985, completed her Family Medicine Residency at Sunnybrook Medical Centre in 1987 and then a 3rd year in Gyne/Obstetrics at St. Michael's Hospital in 1988. She became a Certificant of the College of Family Physicians in 1987 and a Fellow in 2004. She has been involved in teaching Medical Students and Residents for over 20 years. She has academic appointments with the University of Ottawa as well as Queen's University. Her interests include hospital in-patient care, nursing home care, house calls, dialysis, palliative care, women's issues and antenatal care. She spends her free time gardening, road biking, running, X country skiing, snowboarding, hiking and boating.
Dr. Malinowski graduated from Queen's University in 1999, and completed his family medicine residency and 3rd-year Palliative Medicine fellowship at Queen's as well. He had been interested in rural family medicine since he was in medical school, and found the perfect mix of family medicine, hospital work (ER and inpatients), and community work (home visits and LTC) in Barry's Bay. Dr. Malinowski has fully enjoyed the teaching aspect of his practice since coming to Barry's Bay, where he has taught medical students at all stages of training, and has taught family medicine residents as well. His students get a great exposure to the community, touring many of the local gems with the doc and his family. He has also enjoyed speaking at the local public and secondary schools about his training and career in medicine. Dr. Malinowski loves living on one of the local lakes with his family, and appreciates the lack of traffic on his morning commute!
Our Family Physicians work as a part of a six member Family Health Organization that offers comprehensive primary care to the residents of Barry’s Bay and the surrounding areas. Physicians enjoy their cooperative practice as they cross-cover each other's practices and inpatient duties providing solid continuity of care. Their offices are located in a new health centre that is conveniently connected to the hospital, and they also enjoy the benefits of using JonokeMed electronic medical records.
St. Francis Memorial Hospital (SFMH) is located on the western edge of Barry’s Bay with spectacular views overlooking Kamaniskeg Lake. The hospital works very hard to ensure essential services and clinics stay close to home to eliminate unnecessary travel. Visiting specialists provide on-site general surgery, internal medicine and ENT expertise, and the popular telehealth network offers access to a wide range of other specialists (cardiology, hematology, dermatology, psychiatry, etc.). Our hospital is also home to a satellite renal dialysis unit. The on-site care of our dialysis patients is provided by two of the local family physicians. Please see the attached brochure for more SFMH information.
We also have a lot of fun! Barry’s Bay is located on the outskirts of Algonquin Park, so there is no shortage of outdoor activities. In the past, residents have enjoyed taking part in a variety of social and recreational activities including: canoeing, white-water kayaking, hiking, skiing, cycling, fishing, boating, BBQ’s etc. There are also numerous art and music venues to enjoy. A visit would not be complete without a stop at the famous Wilno Tavern, especially on Blues Night. We guarantee that you will have a great time and hope that you accept our invitation to join us."
